Up until now I have resisted tampering with a recipe ingrained in my family's food traditions. A favourite with my siblings and I as we grew up in the 60's and 70's, Apple Crumble has become a symbol of family and togetherness. No McPhee family gathering is complete without Apple Crumble. So here is my 'low carb' version of that family favourite and I am pretty happy with it!!
Ingredients
- 6 Granny smith apples, peeled and sliced
- 150g Butter
- 1 cup Almond meal
- 1 tbsp Natvia
- Optional
- ½ cup chopped nuts or Crunchy Grain Free Granola
Instructions
- Boil apples until soft in a small amount of water. Place in a baking dish.
- Place softened butter, almond meal, Natvia, and nuts in bowl and mix together (real crumble requires mixing by hand), until well combined but still crumbly. Spread over cooked apples and bake at 180 for 30 mins or until crumble is golden brown. Serve warmed with fresh cream or yoghurt. Note that nutritional info is calculated for 1 serve of crumble and does not include cream or yoghurt.

Hi Julia,
I am throughly enjoying your recipes and really enjoying this way of life, it’s new to me and really enjoying it. I have made your apple crumble twice and was just wondering if the amount of butter is too much. I can’t get the crumble to crumble, it turns to paste. I’ve added more almond meal but am just wondering if the butter measurement is a typo or if I’m doing something wrong.
I made your Red Thai Chicken Curry and that is just amazing! Keep the wonderful recipes coming.

I agree with Rachel. There is far too much butter in this. Even with 2 cups of coconut flour I haven’t been able to rescue this crumble 😢
