I read somewhere recently that if you have strong beliefs around a specific lifestyle choice, you should keep it to yourself. Apparently no one really wants to hear about it. Well, when it comes to low carb, morally and ethically I believe I am obliged to speak out whenever I get the chance. If I can make just a few people understand the benefits of low carb and each of them tells someone else about it then I believe I will make a difference. Both friends and critics have quietly (and not so quietly) given low carb a go and although may not have removed carbs completely, have removed enough rubbish and processed sugar from their diets to see some change for the better. This is what makes it all worthwhile.
What I love about my friends is that they are opinionated, out spoken and loyal. They were the first to tell me I was absolutely crazy to go low carb. The usual reasons were rolled out over a glass of wine (sparkling water for me), bad breath, constipation, head aches, and most concerningly my social life would likely cease to exist if I didn’t start drinking again soon! I later learned that this temporary abstinence from alcohol had my friends quietly discussing that at 48 I just might be pregnant! I am pleased to report that the above complaints disappeared pretty quickly; replaced by weight loss, increased energy, a more even temperament, and I like to think a much nicer me. I am back to enjoying a glass of wine again, my friends still like me but the food we now share and enjoy together as a group has definitely improved. Socialising is such an important part of our lives, and your friends support of your lifestyle choices are key to your success. You have an obligation to share the benefits and what you have learned from your low carb experience.
My move to Darwin earlier this year has made me seek out new friends, not always an easy task as I approach 50. I have to say though that the experience has been a pleasure and I think the friendships I am forming are genuine and permanent. This is despite the fact that I am one of those opinionated, outspoken friends who can’t keep my mouth shut about the benefits of low carb. I only provide low carb food when entertaining, and I force my blog on any who show the slightest interest in the subject!
So if you are a regular follower of my blog and you have removed at least some if not all carbs from your diet, please spread the word to your friends and colleagues. Personal stories, not scientific evidence is what makes people sit up and think about their own lives. Your story will inspire your friends, believe me.
Great blog.As one of your” friends” mentioned in this article I can only endorse that your Low Carb Crusade has certainly been working amongst our circle of friends and family and indeed your transformation is an inspiration to us all.Your knowledge and advice has had a positive effect on me and clearly on a lot of our mutual friends who are embracing the low carb lifestyle and looking and feeling fabulous for it.
Julia, Your blog is amazing, you should be very proud of the work you are doing. I love the fact that you have made it a personal journey and that you have invited us along for the ride. Although we’re not totally carb free, I have made a more concerned effort in what I choose to serve as meals for my family. I know Mark and I feel better in ourselves eating less carbs. Thank you for your continual encouragement and positive attitude. You are a great inspiration and a wonderful friend.

Thanks for that Alison. The support and patience you have all shown over the past 2 years is what has encouraged me to continue this crusade!
