Conductors are those who ‘get it’ right from the start. They see the benefit in not eating sugar and reducing carbohydrates, recognise the merits of a diet high in good quality fats, and give it a go. Or maybe they have ‘tried everything’ and this just makes sense. Their weight drops, their energy levels improve and they become more vocal than I am in spreading the low carb word.
Resistors on the other hand fight tooth and nail to sustain their ‘resistor’ label;
- You shouldn’t cut out whole foods groups
- You’ve been telling me for years to eat less fat and more carbohydrate and now you’re telling me the opposite (I take full responsibility for this)
- I can’t give up fruit
- I’ve done that low carb thing before, I lost heaps of weight…………
These states are not necessarily permanent. Like a lightening bolt, a resistor becomes a conductor, it might take 2 years or more but they just can’t refute the truth any longer, or deny what they see going on around them in the media and their social circles. Admittedly this can happen quite covertly until they are ready to admit that maybe, just maybe, I was right.
I had my own lightening strike this week. Just when I thought I knew everything about low carb, the positive impact that a low carb lifestyle has on weight, blood pressure, energy levels etc etc… I was struck by a new level of understanding of why living low carb is just so right.
I shared dinner with a very special woman, a live wire to be more accurate. With the energy of a women half her age, she has defied death by taking her health into her own hands. By replacing inflammatory carbohydrate and sugar with wholesome non-starchy vegetables, nuts and seeds, grain fed meat and poultry and good quality natural fats, she has become virtually free of cancer in around 6 months. An amazing story that I could not have believed if I hadn’t met her myself, experienced her love of life and gritty determination. No miracles there, just a willingness to look beyond what all of the health professionals told her, an understanding and depth of knowledge around the research available to her and a will and need to live.
So resistors, you know who you are, if you can’t find a reason right now to give up carbs, just think about the future. There is more to living low carb than losing weight. I have now seen the evidence first hand of how powerful the simple act of reducing carbs in your diet can be. When I hear stories like this it makes me wonder if the benefits of living low carb can be so extreme over a very short time then the damage that carbohydrates are doing must be equally as extreme.
And when that lightening bolt strikes and you become a conductor, you know where to go www.jmcphee.com.

I consider myself to fall in the conducter category, no sugar and less than 50g carbs per day since middel January, but unfortunately I have not lost any weight. Is there anybody else experiencing the same? I enjoy this way of eating but was hoping to get rid of the stubbord extra weight that I am carrying.
I do hear this quite a lot. The most common problem can be to too much protein and not enough fat. Is it possible that your diet is weighted in protein at the expense of good quality fats (avocado, coconut cream and oil, olive oil, butter). I would be happy to talk to you directly if you think it might help.
